Abstract

Purpose: This research aims to find out the communication phenomenon faced by local communities with the presence of foreign tourists in Bongan Tourist Village. Secondly, it is to find out the cross-cultural communication that occurs between local people and foreign tourists

Research methods: This is qualitative research, data obtained through the process of observation and interviews with several parties in Bongan Tourist Village. The data analysis technique uses 4 stages consisting of data reduction, data triangulation, data analysis, and drawing conclusions.

Findings: The local community's adaptation is found in the use of everyday language which started from using regional/Balinese languages to adding English to communicate, especially when communicating with foreign tourists. Apart from that, language adaptation also occurs among foreign tourists.

Implications: The obstacles or difficulties experienced by local people and foreign tourists in communicating are the lack of ability to speak English as the main intermediary language between local people and foreign tourists.
