Abstract

Purpose: Fabric slashing, a craft-based textile manipulation technique, has emerged as a versatile and sustainable approach in interior decoration. This method involves layering textiles, stitching patterns, and selectively cutting through layers to reveal dynamic textures and colors underneath. The resulting designs range from subtle to intricate, offering creative flexibility that enriches spatial aesthetics. This research investigates the application of fabric slashing as a decorative technique in interior design, emphasizing its artistic and sustainable value. The study explores how varying fabric types—natural and synthetic—impact textural outcomes and how the technique can be applied to a range of interior elements, including cushions, rugs, wall panels, and furniture upholstery.

Research methods: This research uses a qualitative method with a case study approach.

Findings: Findings highlight that fabric slashing not only provides aesthetic benefits, such as creating depth, visual interest, and tactile appeal but also aligns with eco-conscious practices by repurposing textile waste into functional art. Furthermore, this craft-based approach fosters a sense of uniqueness and emotional connection in interior spaces, as handmade products carry distinct character and authenticity that mass-produced items lack. By supporting local artisans and embracing sustainable practices, fabric slashing contributes to a broader movement toward responsible design while preserving traditional craftsmanship. The study concludes that fabric slashing offers significant potential for innovation in interior decoration. It serves as both a practical and artistic solution for designers and craftsmen seeking to integrate texture, dimension, and sustainability into modern interiors.

Implications: Future research could explore advanced applications and collaborations with local communities to further enhance its impact on sustainable design and cultural heritage.
