THE SOCIAL LIFE OF 9TH-CENTURY JAVANESE SOCIETY: A SEMIOTIC ANALYSIS OF THE KARMAWIBHANGGA RELIEFS AT BOROBUDUR TEMPLE

Purpose : To analyze the social life of 9th-century Javanese society through semiotic interpretation of the Karmawibhangga reliefs at Borobudur Temple, focusing on aesthetic and cultural representations.
Research methods: Qualitative descriptive approach, Peirce’s triadic semiotics, visual content analysis, historical reviews, and cross-references with contemporary literature.
Findings : Symbolism in the Karmawibhangga reliefs reveals aspects of social hierarchy, religious practices, and moral values, reflecting aesthetic and cultural significance.
Implications : The study contributes to understanding Javanese art philosophy, highlights the importance of cultural heritage preservation, and promotes education through aesthetic appreciation.
