IRF in Tourism Vocational Classroom Interaction: A Conversation Analysis

Purpose: IRF stands for Initiation (I), Response (R) or Feedback (F) is a strategy in classroom interaction to stimulate the student's ability in speaking. This research aimed to analyze the implementation of IRF in classroom interaction especially in tourism vocational classroom and its motives.
Research methods: This research was conducted in Politeknik Negeri Bali(State Polytechnic of Bali) PSDKU Jembranaand the subjects were two English teachers. The research was designed qualitatively. The data was completed through conversation transcript and interview.
Findings: There were three strategies used in teaching learning interaction including complete pattern (IRF), semi-complete pattern (IR), and incomplete pattern (IF).
Implications: The teachers have some main motives to apply these strategies such as to stimulate the speaking ability of the students, develop the self-confidence, get the students' attention of learning and give equal opportunities to all students in speaking
