Purpose: This research aims to analyze the level of community participation development in the pioneering of Malaumkarta Tourism Village, Sorong Regency, Southwest Papua Province, in 2025.
Research methods: Data were collected through in-depth interviews, participatory observation, document studies, Focus Group Discussions, andquestionnaires. Respondents consisted of traditional leaders, village officials, tourism managers, local communities, and external stakeholders involved in tourism development. Data analysis was conducted by qualitative descriptive and statistic descriptive.
Findings: The level of community participation in the development of Malaumkarta Tourism Village remains in the low–moderate category. Participation is most prominent in the implementation stage, while planning and monitoring dimensions are relatively low. The Tourism Area Life Cycle analysis places the village in the exploration stage, characterized by a limited number of tourists, simple facilities, and dependence on external support.
Implication: From a Community-Based Tourism perspective, principles such as community ownership, decision-making control, and equitable distribution of economic benefits have not yet been fully realized, making participation largely symbolic.
