Abstract

Purpose: The Muslim Village of Gelgel in Klungkung Regency has developed into one of the religious tourism destinations attracting domestic visitors from outside Bali. This study aims to analyze tourists’ motivations for visiting the religious tourism site of Kampung Muslim Gelgel by identifying its tourism potential and the factors that drive visitation behavior.

Research methods: The research employs a qualitative approach through observation, in-depth interviews, and literature review.

Findings: The findings reveal that the Gelgel area possesses multidimensional tourism potential, including historical potential reflected in the presence of the Kerta Gosa complex and the remains of the Gelgel Kingdom; religious potential represented by Kampung Muslim Gelgel, the Nurul Huda Mosque in Gelgel, and the tomb of Habib Ali bin Abu Bakar bin Umar Al-Hamid in Kusamba; socio-cultural potential such as the tradition of megibung ngaminang and the rodat performing arts; as well as cultural-economic potential through local culinary traditions, art markets, and the production of endek textiles. Tourists’ motivations are also multidimensional, encompassing spiritual, historical, social, and recreational drivers.

Implication: Visitors not only undertake pilgrimage activities but also seek to learn about the history of the Muslim community in Bali and experience local cultural traditions.
